EASY WIN FOR CLASSIC. BRIGHT IDEA THE HURDLES. The IN4O-41 racing season for the Auckland Province opened at Ellerslie to-day with the holding of the Pakuranga Hunt Club's annual race meeting. The weather was fine and the attendance large, but the going was holding ae the result of rain during the night and eerly this morning. Favourite Falls Early. The Grcenniount Hunters' Steeplechase was robbed of a good deal of interest through the favourite. Ktcetera, and Leighton Buzzard coming to grief early, while only four eventually completed the course without mishap. Beverley, the winner, owed his success to good jumping and stamina, which enabled him to head off British Lass in the straight. British Lass was .he early leader from Etcetera and Searcher, but up the hill the first time Etcetera was in charge from Leighton Buzzard, Beverley, Silver Wattle, Big Bill, Searcher and British Lass. Etcetera and Leighton Buzzard came to grief at the first fence on the top, while Cockalorum had fallen at the previous obstacle. Silver Wattle led over the double from Beverley, Searcher, British Lar.s and Big Bill. Along the back British Lass took chnrge and led up -the hill the last time from Beverley, Silver Wattle and Searcher. Silver Wattle and Domination fell at the second fence on the hill, and British Lass led into the straight just in front of Beverley, with Searcher half a dozen lengths back. One over the last obstacle Beverley challenge.l British Lass and beat her home by two lengths. Searrher wse 15 lengths away third, followed by Big Bill.
Juvenile Parade. Prior to tlic commencement of the racing a two-year-old juiradc was held. Ten youngsters lined up for a sprint over about two furlongs and three-quarter*. The winner was Golden Pay. a chestnut colt by Autopay—New , Star, ridden by <;. Gilchrist. A* bay filly by Autopay— Arehettc was second, and Transmitter, a colt by Vaals—Telepathy, third. Golden Pay led all the way and won by two lengths, with Telepathy a length away.
Midland Just .Fails. Rright Idea, who was placed over hurdles at the (Jreat Northern meeting, recorded his first win in this department when he won the Harris Memorial Hurdles. Midland attempted to lead practically .all the way and looked to .have the race in hand after jumping the last obstacle, but Bright Idea: finished on too solidly' for him. The Trimmer showed promising form by getting third, while the favourite, Little Ruse, struck the fence in front of the judge's box very hard and this eventually affected his prospects. Midland and The Trimmer were the first to ehow out from Beeswing and Vaalso. Tutor coming to «rrief at the first fence. Midland led past the stand from The Trimmer. Little Rust, Vaalso. Valepear, Bright Idea and Beeswing. Red Appellant falling at the hurdle in front of the judge's box, while Beeswing went at the fence by the sevenfurlong post. Midland was well cleaT of The Trimmer crossing the top with Vaalso. Little Ruse and Bright Idea next. There was little change into the straight except that Bright Idea ha-i run up second, and ouce over the last hurdle he challenged Midland and went on to win by a length. The Trimmer wa» seven lengths further bad; wilb Little Ruse, Vaalso and Valspear next.
Divided Race. Classic, who showed a lot of speed in his races last season, led from end to end in the first division of the Sylvia Park Handicap, and won nicely at the finish. Hunto, who had some useful form recently, and Beau Leon, who was making his first appearance as a three-year-old, never let Classic get far" away. Beau Leon staying on the better of the ;>air to get second. When they settled down Classic and Hunto were followed by Sieglinde. Beau Leon. Little Willonyx and Gay Rosette. The last-named moved up fast crossing the top, and the order into the straight was Classic. Hunto, Beau Leon. Gay Rosette. Sie~linde and Estro. Classic held on to wTn by half a length from Beau Leon, who beat Hunto by a length and a quarter. Sieglinde was fourth, then came Flvin~ Jay Estro, Lady Pay and Vcyana". The second division produced a very close finish, victory going to Rex Maitland, a South Island hack, who recontlv jo.ned I. Tuckers stable. Expellant .p. peared to have matters in hand halfway down the straight, but Rex Maitland wore him down to win bv inches Kara Avis sc t the pace for a good portion of the way. but failed to hold her position over the latter part. Rara Avis and Rex Maitland were the first to show out but running past the four-furlong post White Mark had run up to Rara Avis, with Rev Maitland. Expellant Princess Val and Selwvn next.
