VIGOROUS REPLY BY RIF. BOMBERS.
COASTAL GUNS. Intensive Fire Across Channel. United Press Association.—Copyright (Reed. 2.30 p.m.) LOXDON, Aug. 22. While German long-range guns were shelling a coastal area in southeast Kent to-night, British 'planes launched a great attack on the French side of the Channel, at or near Calais. Heavy gunfire shook towns on the English side. Numerous flares and tracer shells lit up the while red glows on the waterline illuminated the French coastline. British 'planes were apparently intensively bombing Calais and endeavouring to locate and destroy batteries which attacked the convoy to-day. Germans began shelling the Kcglish coast shortly after dusk. A terrific explosion shook the Channel coast at 0 p.m., gunflashes staWbing the darkness. Shells were heard screaming in the sky. A salvo ot Uiree shells opened a bombardment which continued for over half an hour. Anti-aircraft shells flashed from Calais to Boulogne indicating strong formations of British 'planes attacking. The British raid temporarily silence;! German long-range puns, which an hour ""■^later roared into action, sending five shells across the Channel. R.A.F. bombers then delivered a second and more fierce attack which was continuing at 10.43 p.m.
