PUBLIC WORKS.
GENERAL TAPERING OFF. DEMAND FOR FARM WORKERS. There baa been a genera} slackening of public works in the Auckland district of late, and a number of men put off have* been offered work on farms. The position was explained to-day by officials of the Public Works Department, who pointed out that a survey was made some time ago by officials of the Department of labour, and a large number of men then agreed, that if the necessity arose, they would be prepared to take up farm work. Many had already gone to work on farms. Public works were not now of such an extensive nature as they had been, except for certain defence works, aad when jobs ran out men had to seek other work. Farm work, and increased production if primary products, was regarded at the moment as very important in the interests of the Dominion, and every endeavour had to be made to provide the necessary labour. A denial has been given that any preferential treatment is shown 3n connection with puUic works as far as nationality is eoneerend.
