COASTAL CARGO JAM.
CONGESTION OF VEHICLES.
To discu&s means of reducing the congestion of vehicles in Quay Street and on the wharves through the difficulties in handling southern coastal cargoes, the Auckland Harbour Board is arranging a conference with interested organisations for Tuesday evening next.
In a communication from the board, received at yesterday's meeting of the executive of the Auckland Manufacterers' Association, it yeas stated that, until additional berthage now under construction was completed, which would enable a special loading berth to be reserved for the sole use of the southern coastal trade, it would be impossible to overcome completely the congestion of vehicles in Quay Street and on the wharf, .which had unfortunately become snch a common sight on the waterfront. However, with reasonable co-operation between interested aarties, it was considered an improvement coukl be effected. The executive appointed two members to attend the conference, and also decided to approach the Union Steam Ship Co., Ltd., regarding irregularities of the coastal service.
After hearing complaints by members that goods intended for them had been overcarried both to Australia and the United States through delays in discharging operations in Auckland,'the following motion was carried:—"That the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation be requested to inform the Prime Minister, the fii. Hon. P. Fraser, that owing to waterfront delays goods of vital necessity to the public have been overcarried. Evidence could be given where manufacturing had in consequence heen held up for goods for whi*h the public was in urgent need."
