MANUKAU JUNIORS RIDE 25 MILES FAST.
CENTRE CHAMPIONSHIP.
Since its introduction in the 1937 season the junior teams Championship conducted by the Auckland Cycling Centre has fulfilled expectations. In 1937 the Lynndale combination won. in 193S Mannkau. and Northern in 1939. Five.teams lined up for the 1940 contest over 25 miles last Saturday, and all bar North Shore produced the requisite three to finish of the four starters. Sixteen-year-old R. F. Klinkenbcrg captained a strong team for Manukau A, with S. Lloyd. I>. Aullck and A. N. Smith combining perfectly. Their time of 68.55J compares favourably with that of the Manukau senior team, which covered the course in 64.47 under much more favourable conditions last J tine. Each individual member had had a win or a fastest time to his credit during the present season. The Lynndale quartet was almost 2 minutes slower, while Northern's team took 72.11 and Mttnukau B 72.27—slowest of the day.
E. W. Buchanan must have -been inspired by his new machine in the Manukau Club's strenuous 03 miles race on He came home well ahead of L. D. McGrath and W. H. Smith, after a bold breakawav attempt with seven miles to go. Only a junior. McGrath displayed exceptional stamina, but was lucky to outsprint Smith, whose chain came otf just when he most needed it. Smith, winner of many distance races in past seasons, appeared at his best. Thirteen years of racing have not dulled ■S. J. Baird's speed to any great extent, for he made one of his rare appearances and ran fourth. War nook and Linton iust managed to hold off the scratch division, but failed to overhaul G. Simpson-Beer. exStratford rider, who made a great effort on his own. Wilson gave Johnson one of his hardest sprints of the season, but could not prevent the unpaced champion from collecting time honours.
i SI. G. Ilarland's presence created interest In the Beacli Haven Club's race from Birkenhead to Albany and back (15 miles). Although the Northern Club's scratch rider was fastest he could n-cit get within striking distance of .T. Bland, and 13 year-<Sd T. Moore. The last-named won a 25 miles race Inst June with Bland second on that occasion. Harland's success lion - uvikes J. A. Marris' task of equalling Ron. Foubister's wonderful 1931 record (of 17 fastest* in a season) much more difficult, for Marris must be fastest in each club race for the remainder of this season. Lynndale and Northern. S. Adshead. winner of the Lynliflale Club's combined 16-mile race, rode impressively in the centre's race of 44 miles last month, and has made a fine start for his first season. Roy -Clark has been fastest in two club events this year, and thus equalled his brother's record. L. P. Mills paced with Clark until ho fell but remounted and eventually finished 6is slower than Clark, whose tinia was 48.14. A. W\ Wallace proved that a 30s seduction of his previous week's handicap was not sufficient, to prevent another victory. The previous week lie won the Northern Club's 20 milee off 8.0. He liad 730 la«t Saturday, but had a far harder ride as his time of 61.6 was nearly 3.0 slower. C. D. Lapwood revealed much Improvement to be fastest, after a third place in the Jolioaton Memorial Cup race.
