FALL FROM PIER.
DROWNING PATAIITY.
CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. A married man, Mr. William Free aged 3/, was drowned when he fell off the New Brighton pier about 5 p.m today. The body was recovered at 10 p.m Air. J«ree was standing on the pier with his wife. When he fell into the water, TWA v T i , " Vate Stanle - V Orr > of the Ihird Echelon, who was standing on the pier, threw a wooden eeat and a lifebelt into the water and dived in. He tried unsuccessfully to reecue Mr. Free who soon disappeared. An attempt to find Mr. Free was also made by two men who swam out well beyond the pier. They at first thought it wae Private Orr who was in but he directed them toward the soot where Mr. Free had fallen in P Admiration was expressed for the action of Private Orr, who wa s not an experienced swimmer, and had eome dif■f ty e ,n , r / achia S the ehore with the aid of a lifebelt.—(Press Assn )
