CRASH THROUGH ROOF. Twelve Nazis "Bail Out" And Are Captured. United Press Association.—Copyright. (Reed. 1 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 12. German bombers were again active last night and this morning, stated earlier messages. Raiders, after hovering over a south-western town for some time, dropped half-a-dozen bombs in quick succession, severely damaging houses in the residential section. A bomb crashed through the roof of a convent and another landed in a cemetery. Farm buildings were damaged near a Welsh town. Bombs fell in the suburbs of a north-east coast town and also in two towns in the south-east. British fighters, participating in a series of air battles, foiled two largescale German attacks on the south-east coast. Several raiders were seriously damaged here, in addition to live shot down. R.A.F. 'planes pounced on the Germans in the first attack. One raider vanished out of control, and the remainder broke 1.3 the' engagement and fled for home. Three heavy explosions heralded a second attack, and four German 'planes soared over and sent down a balloon in flames. Anti-ai -raft guns opened fire and British fighters attacked. All the British fighters soon afterwards returned. Three of five German victims crashed in the Channel, while r. sixth, with smoke pouring from the ' dane, was seen heading for the French coast and losing height rapidly. Two German pilots "baled out" and were carried further out to sea as their parachutes drifted down. One of the sharpest engagements was fought over a coastal town, where two Germans were seen to break away with a Spitfire pumping bullets into one which was put out cT control. Another German crashed in flames. Five more bombers were brought down in the afternoon during the biggest raid that a south-eastern town has so far received. About 30 Junkers 88 divebomliers flew over. Twelve Germans baled out, and all were captured. The "Evening News," In a late extra, s-iid the biggest air battles of the war were proceeding along the Channel and Thames Estuary. Hundreds of 'planes were engaged. Fighters on the north-east coast early to-day shot down a bomber. One of the crew was killed and three were taken prisoner. Th» R.A.F. chased other north-eastern raiders out to sea. No damage was done and there were no casualties.
