MUST ECONOMISE.
BRITISH HOUSEWIVES. BIG LIST OF NON-ESSENTIALS British housewives, and the British public generally, will have to practise considerable economy, as a wide range of everyday commodities will henceforth become considerably harder to procure. This is the result of a Government measure restricting supplies of non-essential goods for home consumption, in order to strengthen Britain's wartime economic system. Interesting details of the limitation of retail sales of certain types of articles in common use in Britain are contained in a recent issue of the Board of Trade Journal. Supplies of non-essential articles are limited, on the grounds that in wartime consumers can manage with fewer of them. Supplies of goods listed in the order are restricted to two-thirds for home consumption. The restriction is computed on value, and for purposes of administration suppliers are obliged to register. There is no restriction on the supply of goods for export, but only for the home market. The wares listed include. Corsets, gloves, underwear, stockings and bathing costumed, lace, furs; mattresses, pillows and cushions; carpets, mats and linoleum; pottery other than artificial teeth, bricks, tiles, electrical fittings and sanitary earthenware; glassware, of kinds used for household and domestic purposes; metal furniture and fittings, cutlery, cooking ytensils, buckets,. dustbins and other similar metal articles; trunks, purses, wallets and bags other than gasmask containers; cane and wicker furniture; cameras and photographic materials; musical instruments; sports and gamea equipment; toys other than crackers and paper hats; fancy goods of ivory, amber, coral, nacre, tortoiseshell or semi-precious stones or of celluloid, casein, or papier mache, as well as beads, book ends, inkstands, picture frames, smokers' requisites, combs, manicure sets, powder and lipstick containers, fountain pens and propelling pencils, and umbrellas; mechanical lighters, goldsmiths' and silversmiths' wares other than clocks and watches, perfumery and toilet preparations other than soap, tooth paste and tooth powder; lawn-mowers, vacuum cleaners, washing machines, refrigerators, electric toasters and other household machinery. Supplies of all these articles on the home markets are being limited.
