MATRON-IN-CHIEF.

HONOUR FOR MISS NUTSEY. CALLED UP FOR SERVICE. The Director-General of Health, Dr. 1 M. H. Watt, in a letter to the Hospital \ Board, stated that he had received advice from army headquarters that it had been decided to appoint Miss E. M. Nutsey, lady superintendent at the Auckland Hospital, matron-in-chief of the New Zealand Army Nursing Service overseas, and that her services would be required by the Army Department as from the end of October next. He asked the board to make the necessary arrangements to release Miss Nutsey. The chairman, Mr. Allan J. Moody, said that they all appreciated the honour Miss Nutsey had received. He pointed out that they had had no official communication from the authorities until the present letter. He spoke most highiy of Miss Nutsojfc's capability for the most important position. Mr. J. V. Macky said that it was the highest position that any woman in New Zealand could occupy on war service. -.After Miss Nutsey had been lated by other members of the board, the members unanimously granted her leave of absence, but the board decided to ask for definite information as to when she would be likely to leave. Miss Nutsey thanked the members of the board for their good wishes. Miss Nutsey has been lady superintendent of the Auckland Hospital since 1928. She was trained at Auckland, and in 1915 went to the war with the first contingent of New Zealand nurses. She was 4J years on active service, was mentioned in dispatches for bravery, and was decorated as an Associate of the Royal Red Cross of England. On returning to New Zealand she was matron of Opotiki Hospital. After a visit to South Africa, Miss Nutsey was matron of Stratford Hospital, and later of Hawera Hospital. She then came to Auckland. In 1937 she received the honour of M.B.E.
