THE METROPOLE.

Birthday celebrations at the Metropole have become a popular vogue, another large party of guests contributing to last Saturday evening's gathering. A special cubicle was decoraited . with multi-coloured balloons in honour of the event, and the supper table was arranged with bowls of pastel Iceland poppies and gay favours. Lew Jones and his musicians gave great pleasure with their interpretation of items for modern and old-time dancing, and patrons insistently demanded encores of favourite melodies. Original arrangements by Mr. Jones of wellknown airs, assisted by the orchestra, were artistic features of the entertainment. Monte Carlo competitions and supper were also included in the evening's programme. The inside of a vacuum flask should be washed out with a solution of salt and vinegar.
