FIRE TRAGEDY.
KILLED IN SLEEP. SUFFOCATED BY SMOKE. ELDERLY WIDOWER'S DEATH. Mr. Albert Bayly Smith, a widower, aged 65, was suffocated in his sleep on Saturday night by smoke from a fire which broke out in the house in which he was boarding. Firemen, who overcame t/he flames, found Mr. Smith's body in one of the rooms. '. Mr. Smith wae alone in the house, 15, Maungawhau Road, at the time, the oooupieiß, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Norton, their son, and three other relatives, having gone out for the evening. The outbreak was noticed by a passer-by shortly before 10 o'clock, and the Central and Parnell fire stations sent engines. The firemen had to break down the front door, and found one room burnt out and the fire spreading across a passage to another room. The fire was quickly suppressed, but Mr. Smith had already been overcome by the heat and emoke. 'Considerable damage was done to tha eight-roomed house.
