COST OF LIVING.
REQUEST FOR BONUS. RAILWAYMEN'S DECISIONS. SEVERAL PROTESTS VOICED. (By Telegraph.--Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. A mass meeting at the Hutt railway workshops passed a resolution protesting against the incidence of taxation as affecting railway employees, and calling for a cost of living bonus to cover the steep increases in living costs. The meeting considered the necessary revenue could be obtained by implementing to the full the declared policy of conscription of wealth. The meeting also protested against the attitude of the secretary of the New Zealand Labour party in suggesting at Kotorua the cancellation of the 40-hour week, where necessary, without full consultation with trades unions and Labour party branches; against the granting of £1350 a year, plus expenses, to members of the War Cabinet; and against the high salaries being paid to newlycreated, boards and commissions, and to members of the Public Service receiving in excess of £500 a year.
