GIFTS OF BUTTER.
I lave observed a number of letters advocating gifts of New Zealand butter to individuals in the United Kingdom. Unfortunately the idea is unworkable at present because the British Government rations supplies -o that everybody may draw four ounces of butter weeklv. But a gift of, say. 10.000 boxes of butter to the British Government would be universally approved by the people of New Zealand, and would provide a practical gesture of sympat&T, which, so far in the present war, ha* been lacking in our relations with the Mother Country. The British Government has a contract with our Government for the supply of batter, but this 100,000 boxes would not be charged for. The dairy factories, of conrse, would he paid for it as usual and our Government would foot the bill, so that everybody in the country would bear their "dwe of the gift, unless there is anything left in the costless, credit kitty. * It would run into, say, £350,000, which no one can suggest is being over-liberal.
