SUBVERSIVE SPEECH.
COMMUNIST FOUND GUILTY.
After he had addressed the jury on the evidence presented by Mr. V. R. Meredith on behalf of the Crown, charging him with having made subversive statements in the course of a speech at a street meeting during the Auckland West by-election in May last, Alexander Drennan, waterside worker, was found guilty by a jury in the Supreme Court yesterday afternoon.
Accused, in his address, contended that everything in support of the Communist candidate at the election had been done in a constitutional manner, and the character of the speech had been determined by the programme of the candidate's party.
The jury added a rider stron«lv re-, commending mercy on tlio grounds* that the speech was made in the heat of an election campaign.
His Honor Mr. .Justice Fair, in remanding accused for sentence, said that he would srive the greatest weight to the recommendation.
