MINING ACCIDENTS.
25 DEATHS DUHXHCt TEAS.
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Twenty-five fatal accidents in mines and quarries occurred during 1939, according to the Mines Report tabled is Parliament this afternoon. Of this total 17 occurred in accidents in coal mines. The Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb, said that the year was marred by the regrettable disaster which occurred at the Glen Afton Colliery, in which 11 men lost their lives. It was pleasing to record the greater measure of co-operation which now exists between owners and workmen in the adoption and use of the latest types of safety equipment. Protective helmets are now fairly widely used, and the value of this type had been illustrated by the fact that since their adoption in 1936 several fatalities had been averted.
