GEOLOGICAL SURVEY.
RESOURCES OF DOMINION. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, this day. During the 1939-40 field season tie Geological Survey Department earned out systematic mapping in the Danaevirke, Greymouth and Orepuki districts and deposits of possible economic value were also examined by Government officials in several parts of the Dominion. This fact was mentioned in the Mines Statement tabled in BuEa- | ment this afternoon bv the Minister of 1 Mines, Hon. P. C. Webb. The oil-bearing strip along tie ait % coast of the North Island was majpi in detail as was also the Greymaatk i district, which contains the most nilable coking and gas coals in New Zetland. and the Orepuki subdivision, <m-\ taining deposits of coal, oil shale ill alluvial gold. Lower valued itinera! resources at Rotokaua, for sulphur, near Porangahau, for bentonite, and near Kaka, in Nelson, for feldspathie - clay, were ako investigated. Geophysical work was carried out at Onekaka to determine the depth of iron-ore, and at Cambridge to aeeotau the nature of dam-foundations. Mis- i cellaneous work included the examination of deposits of manganese-ore southeast of Auckland, of chromite at D'Urville Island and the Croixelles, and of harite, near Baton Saddle.
