CHAIRMAN'S SPEECH. SUPREME COURT TRIAL. SUBVERSIVE REMARK CHARGE Arising out of a speech made by him as chairman at an election meeting of the Communist candidate for Auckland, Weet on May 8 in Renall Street Hall, Ponsonfby, Doug-lae James Morey was charged before Mr. Justice Fair and a jury in the Supremo Court to-day with having made a subversive statement infringing the Public Safety Regulations. .Mr. V. R. Meredith conducted the case for the Crown. Tile accused man defended himself and insisted that the charge against him should include the whole text of his speech, and not merely excerpts. The accused requested a test of the shorthand reporter who took a note of his. speech, IVian A. Snowdon. A first trial was made with a reading by the accused of the Communist manifesto, when the witness objected that the trial had been sprung on him and affected his nerves. After an adjournment, a second test was made with a different class of matter. Detective Bayliss nave evidence of a long-hand note taken by him at the meeting of a statement by Morey condemning war action and suggesting that public opinion be conducted to prevent senseless flaughter.
