MONTEREY HITCH.
NO WORK DONE AFTER 6 P.M.
COMMISSION INVESTIGATING,
A quantity of cargo for the United States had to be left on the wharf on Saturday night, and the Mateon liner Monterey sailed without it. Waterside \vorke.rs did not work after 6 p.m., eince the shipping company is required to inform them before 10 a.m. if they are likely to be required to work after G p.m. The ship eventually sailed at 8.-15 p.m. A quantity of perishable goods was loaded by the company'e staff and othere aft<»r 0 p.m., but a number of baj;s of hides and some meat caeings were left behind. It was pointed out by a waterfront official thie morning that the company could have had the watersiders working if they had asked for them in time, but it had not been thought that loading would need to continue after 0 p.m. The manager for the agents in Auckland, Mr. A. E. Playle, described the position ae extremely unsatisfactory, particularly when New Zealand needed every dollar of American credit she coulri get to aid in the purchase of war materials. The Waterfront Control Commission is investigating the position, and a report is being drawn up.
