Breaking , into the post office at Runciman last night, thieves removed the safe in a, motor car, took it along a lonely coun.-.ry road a mile away, blew the door open with gelignite, and stole cash, postal notes and stamps to the value of about £135.
The Runciman post office is a separate unit of a building situated about half a mile from the township of Drury. Early this morning it was found that the front door had been forced with a jemmy. The safe was missing. Later the safe was found by the police on the side of the Jesmond Estate Road about one mile away.
The door of the safe was blown off by a charge of gelignite, which had been plugged into the keyhole. The safe contained about £50 in cash, mostly banknotes, postal notes of various denominations to the value of about £60, and approximately £25 worth of postage stamps. Both the postal notes and stamps are negotiable. The thieves also stole the adjustable date stamp from the post office.
