PUPUKE WATER.
NEW FILTRATION PLANT.
DEVONPORT COUNCIL'S ACTION,
As a practical measure intended to overcome the complaints of obnoxious taste and quality of the water derived from Lake Pupuke, the Devonport Borough Council last evening decided to accept a quotation from Candy Filters, Limited, to install a filtration and treatment plant at the lake. The cost is in the vicinity of £15,000. In explaining the proposition, the Mayor, Mr. H. F. W. Meikle, stated that in order to obviate a poll of the ratepayers, it was intended to finance the work on borough overdraft. He considered that it would probably take about nine months to make the scheme operative. He expressed the opinion that once the plant was installed, the North Shore Water Board would probably take it over as part of the major Pupuke-Wairau water supply ssheme, estimated to cost £178,000.
The motion to accept the filtration proposal was carried on the voices, Messrs. E. Aldridge and C. Farquharson requesting that their dissent be recorded to the proposal and to the method of financing involved.
