"MEAN THEFTS."
CASH AND CLOTHES. GAOL FOR SHIP'S STEWARD. Pleading guilty to three charges of theft and one of ship's desertion, Patrick Evans, a steward, aged 36, was sentenced to four months' imprisonment by Mr. W. R. MeKean, S.M., in the Police Court to-dav.
Detective-Sergeant McHugh said accused signed on the Zealandic in London, but deserted the ship after her arrival at Auckland in June, 1930. He secured employment at a city hot il and was given three suits to look after by a man then going away. One suit he sold for £1 o/. From the 'oom of aji acquaintance accused stole a suit and suitcase, and had also stolen £9 9/, which had been given him by an acquaintance to change into Australian currency. "They were particularly mean thefts," said Mr. McHugh.
