NEWS OF THE DAY.

News of Maori Battalion.

Men of the Maori Battalion of the H.Z.E.F. are in good heart and very lit, according to a statement by their commander from Daventry last evening. Members of the battalion broadcast a programme of songs, hakas. and special messages to their kin in the Dominion. Winers' War Effort. With a view to easing the existing coal shortage and also as a part of the general war effort, miners at the Glen Afton and filcn Massey coal mines are working on alternate Saturdays, thus rendering available approximately 2000 more tons of coal each week. The men, who volunteered to take this step, are not working for overtime rates, and the Railway Department, in particular, will benefit considerably by their action. Price of Bread. - For delivery of half-loaves of bread in Auckland, an extra charge of M is now being made, this bringing the delivered cost to 3id. In the past the charge was 3d over the counter, 3id if delivered and booked, but only 3d if delivered for cash. The price of the 21b loaf remains unaltered at 5Ad over the counter, and 6d delivered. The new move brings Auckland into line with other centres, where these prices have been operating for some time.

Fog Over the City. For the second time in reeont weeks a thick pall of fog made traffic of all kinds move warily about the city this morning. As is usual, ferries on the harbour travelled at reduced speeds and no untoward happening's occurred on the harbour. Cars parked about the city this morning with their lights still shining were mute witnesses of the precautions their owners had taken in the early hours. The fog seemed to be specially thick in the Kpsom and One Tree Hill districts, but was quickly dispersed before tho morning was very old by the bright sunshine and a light ! breeze.
