CLOTHES DRIVE.
CITY AND SUBURBS.
EXCELLENT RESPONSE.
POSTMEN AS COLLECTORS. Postmen in the city, suburbs and country had a new task on Saturday. Instead of delivering letters in the afternoon they were on collection bent. Over 100 letter carriers took part in the drive in the city and suburbs for clothes and materials provided [>y householders for refugees in Great Britain, and this work they carried out voluntarily on behalf of the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild.
Thousands of articles, filling 200 cars, were received, and the parcels were taken to some 20 depots in the city and suburbs for sorting and dispatching to the central organisation. Workers were on the spot to open the parcels as they arrived.
The clothing, hats and footwear donated covered the widest description, and included articles for men, women and children. Members of various branches of the guild commented on the usefulness of the articles and their ; cleanliness, and, as one said, "There was j no junk."
As usual, the public responded in a most generous manner, and in 6ome suburbs—Kingaland, for instance—the result exceeded all expectation. In districts such as Mount Eden and Parnell, where collections had been made by the local branches of the guild some time previously, residents donated many more parcels of useful gifts.
Assisting the "posties" were about 4;">0 boy scouts, other workers and members of the various branches of the guild. In addition, there were over 100 private motorists who placed their cars at the disposal of the Post and Telegraph Department for the collection of clothing and several firms loaned their vans, the drivers also giving their services voluntarily. The postmen in the city proper made their collections during the morning, but in the suburbs a start was not made until 1 p.m. ,
