RATES STRUCK.

FINANCE FOR CITY.

REDUCTION OF 30 IN THE £.

DEMANDS IMMEDIATELY.

Rates for the current year, a total levy of 4/1J in the £, a reduction of 3d in the £ compared with last year, were-struck at a special meeting of the Auckland City Council at noon to-day.

The levy includes a general rate of 1/11, a library rate of l*4d, a hospital and charitable aid rate of 6Jd, and a special rate of 1/7. The rate demands will be issued Immediately from the city treasury, and the 10 per cent penalty for non-payment of rates will accrue as from January 2G of next year. On the motion of the Mayor, Sir Ernest Tfcivis, the formal resolution to strike the . rate was unanimously approved.

The city treasurer, Mr. T. W. M. Ashby, in a report, stated that the council was empowered to make a rebate of the drainage rate and portion of the water rate in cases where properties could not be connected with the sewer, with the exception of those properties which had se|rtic tanks installed. The matter principally affeetcd certain properties in the Avondale and Point Chevalier districts. He recommended that a refund, or remission, of 25 per cent of the water rates, up to a maximum of £1, together with an amount equivalent to 2fd of the general rate on the valuation of the property, be granted on such properties as cannot be connected with tlie drainage system, and that in the case of similar properties, which cannot be connected with the drainage system and have septic tanks installed, a refund or remission of 2jd of the general rate of the valuation of the property be granted. The r&coihmendations were adopted.
