CHAT SURPRISES.

WELLINGTON STEEPLES

EL MEYNELL CONSISTENT. ROYAL STAR 11. TAKES WHYTE ?By Telegraph—Special to " Star.") WELLINGTON, t'his day. The easy success of an outsider, Chat, from tlie second favourite, Ballybrit, and the favourite, I'adishah, and the falls by Clarion Call and (ray Boa, were the fei■tiires of the Wellington Steeplechase. the principal race on the opening day of the W cllinyton Racing Club's winter meeting at Trentham yesterday. Ohat, a six-year-old black mare by Siegfried from Tale Tel lor, is trained by A. M. Wright at Woodville for Mr. C. I'. Illorburn. Wright was associated with Finst Line's success in 1020. During tihe present season Oil at lias been racing solid ly but has not always stayed on. There was liitle incident early, Flashlight setting the pace from Ballybrit and h a >; ® O iV with Tour, Olwt and Clarion Call following, I'adishali being near the 1 ear. Clarion Call pulled his way into the a ' t'"-' end of a round, Oliat soon joining bun, wibii Gay Boa. Small Bov <in<l lMaßhiig.ilt handy. When nine furlongs from home Gay Boa blundered at the briush-. fence, while Padishah nearly came down. Clarion Call crashed at* the board fence near the five-furlong post through over-reaching, and Gay Boa also tell. Chat was then left with a lead of aioout 75 yards, and she eventually won by ten lengths from Ballybrit. who was fifteen lengths in front of Padishah. The last-named came home very tired. Lactose, hard ridden, got to within three lengths of Padishah, while Flashlight was stopping

to a walk in fiftsh place. Small Boy also tired badly, and En Tour soon drifted out of the picture. Dozle Boy, a consistent hack this winter, had his third success for the season in the Marirl Hack Steeples. He outjumped Game Pit to take the lead «t the fifth fence, and though King Slestor went with htm over the final round he stayed on too solidly. Lovelilt owed her second placing to stamina. King Mestor tired badly over the last half-mile, and Onewlietu just failed to overtake him. Game Pit showed out early, but hooked Ills fences badly. Tutor jumped poorly at hunting pace, and wan soon toiling In the rear. Surcoat also failed to jump cleanly, and shook off his rider when lying third with half a mile to go. I Tuatara, a three-year-old gelding by Lord Quex, bought by Mr. W. McA. Duncan as a yearling for 200 guineas, has proved to be a payable proposition. Stamina enabled him to overhaul Flying Flag and win the Woburn Handicap nicely by a neck. Tuatara has won four races In this, his fliwt season, and is now out of hack class. Kxpellant Wfjs not prominent enrly, but came home well to cut Lueullus Boy, who was always well placed, out of third money. Laughing Song and Kriemhild, who set the pace from barrier rise, were next. Norse, who was seventh, never looked likely. Pekoe, the Opnnake Cup winner, added the Vittoria Hurdles to liig record, but it was not an easy success, as Midland, who tried to lead all the way, contested' every stride in the run home. There was only a neck separating them at the post. Pekoe has had little experience as a hurdler and should build up a good record. Bisquit was handily placed for a mile, but then faded. Esperance Bay had taken third place starting on the final half-mile, and he was an easy third. Tidewaiter headed the rest. Tnraki and Smoke Screen were soon toiling in the rear and never Improved, while Land Baid, after having a "life" at the second hurdle, gradually drifted. Araboa made a move along the back, but did not carry on. Good Finish. Blonde" Princess, the place favourite, won the Stewards' Handicap by a neck from an outsider in Screen Star, who made a great finish. Screen Star made the pace 10 the Btraight, but below the distance Blonde Princess caught him. Screen Star kept up Ills run, but Blonde Princess hung on solidly. Brazilian put In a fast late dash for third, witb White Rajah, Amigo and Vascones following in that order. Grey Honour was well placed to the straight, but did not finish on. Skyrena joined in at the straight entrance, but could not improve. Orate was left at the start.' El Meynell had his third success in as many starts over hurdles in the Trentliam Hurdled. He was In third place behind Jewelled Girdle and Hessketoon early, but with seven furlongs to go joined Hessketoon, and a little further on took the lead to win easily. Curie dropped out soon after reaching the straight, Soho finishing well to beat Blue Tiger by a length for second. Hessketoon was a poor fourth, with Curie and Aussie Ra together next. Survalyon fell at the second to last hurdle and broke his neck. Royal Star 11., bought for the bargain price of 25 guineas last January, led all the way in the Whyte Handicap. Hunting Royal, after being well placed throughout, finished on, but Royal Star 11. had a margin of three lengths at the end. Ned Cutitle got up in time to head off Disdain (who had every chance) for third. Alma, Du Maurier and Philemup also had every show, but did not run on. Classform finished sixth, after being one of the last away. Dictate and Halm enter were soon near tlie rear, while Silver Glow was sent off from the back of the field. Little Robin finished on too solidly for ■the others in the Te Aro Handicap after giving away a good deal of ground early. Stella Lux easily held off Pink Ladi for second, the last-named being well back early, but in a handy position at the straight entrance. Authoress made most of the pnee, but after being clear to the straight compounded quickly. 'Sheeny, Don Quex and Te Ore were not good enough. Arabic lost his chance at the start. The weather was fine, there was a large attendance and the track was heavy. During the day the- sum of £00,632 10/ was put through the totalisator. against £57,341 for the corresponding day last year, an increase of £3291 10/.
