The invention of gunpowder is generally ascribed to Berfcholdus, or Michael Schwartz, a Cordelier monk of Goslar, south of Brunswick, in Germany, about 1320. But main- writers maintain that it was known much earlier in various parts of the world. Some say that the Chinese and Hindus possessed it centuries before. Its composition is expressly inentioiied by Roger Bacon, who died in 1292.
