Rhododendrons Need Little Pruning
LIKE all the members of this group the Rhododendron does not need much pruning. The flowers should be removed a» soon as they fall, in order to pre- ■ vent seed formation, or a smaller display can be expected in the following season. It well to remember, however, that th® rhododrjndran can stand the knife, and if a plant k getting too tall and
- —————————————— ——— w thin at the bottom it is quit® safe to out the shrub hard back into the old wood. Every year the rhododendron makes a large number of buds, which remain dormant, and cutting back has the effect of starting these into growth. As far as planting is concerned, rhodo- : dendrons are not nearly so particular ► as to the time of transplanting as are other evergreens. Instead of rooting deeply they make a great mass of fibrous roots, which hold much of the soil in lifting. If the whole ball be then replanted the shrub will be little , the worse, whatever time may be I chosen.
