Brief Notices

"T. E. Lawrence." By Vyvyan Richards. Duckworth. This addition to the "Groat Lives" series has been written by one who is described as a close friend of Lawrence in his younger days. Mr. Richards points out that Lawrence's "Seve.n Pillars of Wisdom" was written when Lawrence's hopes of Arabia were in ruins, his pledged word betrayed. The foundation of the Arab kingdom of Irsvcj was still to come (ae the result, in part, of the work of Mr. Churchill) and Lawrence wrote "at a time of desperate frustration." His later book, "The Mint," which is not to be published before 1930 at the earliest is, in the opinion of those who have read it, "Nearer to authentic art" than "The Seven Pillars." Mr. Richards has write.-n a useful introduction to the study of one of the most astonishing careers and on e of the strangest characters in British history.

"Camps. Tramps and Trenches." By Eric Miller. Heeds (Wellington). A good account of some phases of the New Zealand soldier's life in the last war. Mr. Miller was a sapper and dispatch rider with the 3rd Field Company of New Zealand Engineers. He left Wellington in .January 17, 1917, in the transport Waitemata, and after training at idling Camp reached France four months later, lie seems to have "written up" his diary every day to please himself and with no other thought, except that, pc.rhaps. some of his friend* might like to read it. Headers may com- . pare his experiences with those of the soldiers of to day. "Through Australian Eyes," Pamphlets on \N orlii Affairs. Angus and Robertson. 1 hese pamphlets closely resemble in size and form those of the series used by the Oxford University t*ress. -Some cover the same ground as the English series, but three of the six to hand are new, distinctive, and informative "The Old A.T.F. and the New," by C. E. W. Bean; "The Real Costs of War, ' by R. C. Mills, and "Transport of Food in War," by Eric Ashby.
