MATERNITY BENEFIT.
COMMENT BT DR. MoMIIXAN. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. ; One wondered why it was that the Opposition should find so recently a concern for the family and the cradle, said the Minister of Marine, Dr. McMillan, in the financial debate in the House of Representatives yesterday. Opposition members, he added, had been opposed to the. provision of the maternity benefit. Yet to-day the maternity benefit wae working with 100 per cent success. Practically every maternity home proprietor in Ne.w Zealand, every doctor, and lc:'. ainly all patients were unanimous in their agreement about its success. "If a vote of medical practitioners was taken to-morrow," said Dr. McMillan, "I don't think 1 per cent of the.m would vote to go back to the old unsatisfactory state of affaire that existed before the introduction of that benefit."
