BUDGET DEBATE

UNDER FIRE.

STATE FINANCE.

OPPOSITION ATTACK.

WEAKNESSES CRITICISED.

PRIME MINISTER IN REPLY. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. After some delay the formal debate on the Budget Was launched in the House of Representatives last night by the Leader of the Opposition. Though his attack lacked much of its usual fire, Mr. Hamilton did not hesitate to criticise the weaknesses he found in the Budget. They were many, and he summed up his view of the document as one that was in many respects confused and confusing. One of the points lie emphasised with some vigour was the need for some lead by the Government in practising economies.

He was followed by the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, who, in a general defence of the Government's proposals, answered specitic points raised by Mr. Hamilton.

The third speaker was Mr. Lee (Democrat Labour, Grey Lynn), who campaigned vigorously against the orthodoxy of the Budget and moved an amendment designed to align opinion in the House on the issue. He was still speaking when the House adjourned.
