Tournaments, or jousts, were martial sports of the ancient cavaliers. "Tournament" is derived from the French word '"tourner, "to turn round." Tournaments were frequent about 890; and were regulated by the Emperor Henry I. about 919. Tournaments were introduced into England early in the 12th century; were prohibited by Henry 11., but were revived by Richard I-, hie eon.
