MONETARY BENEFITS.

OVER £10,000,000 PAID.

REVENUE TOTALS £11,367,000.

The report of the Social Security Department presented to the House of Representatives last night by the Min-ister-in-Charge, Mr. Parry, for the year ended March 31 last, showed that the receipts in the Social Security Fund amounted to £11,367,117, including a £1,000,000 vote from the Consolidated Fund and an £809,367 transfer from the 1938-39 Budget surplus. Payments for monetary benefits totalled £9,337,243, maternity benefits from May 15, 1939, £283,813 and hospital benefits from July 1, 1939, £772,886.

The administration expenses of this account amounted to £449,274, leaving a balance of £523,901.

The total number of persons who applied for unemployment benefit durthe year was '46,708. Of these 34,762 were granted benefits resulting in the expenditure of £434,497. "

With the exception of 2048 persons, who were granted emergency benefits amounting to £47,884 on grounds of hardship, 9898 persons who registered were not granted benefits, chiefly for the reason that they were placed in employment immediately they registered. At March 3i ; 1940 there ere 2743 males and 310 females receiving unemployment benefits. At March 31°, 1939, there were 7256 males receiving sustenance relief from the employment promotion fund by reason of the fact that for health and other reasons they were unable to be placed in employment. Expenditure on sickness benefits during the year for 17,800 beneficiaries was £205.790. A further £10.458 was provided for 632 beneficiaries who could not qualify for variolic; reasons for a sickness benefit, but who were "ranted emergency benefits in lieu on rounds of hardship.

At March 31, 1940, there were 1917 males and 648 females receiving sickness benefits.

With all forms of payments, including war pensions and' war veterans' allowances and payments on behalf of other Governments the total eum paid out amounted to £11,577,116
