MAORI WORKMAN'S FATE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. Struck on the head by a broken shaft of a horse-operated winch at Waiotu yesterday, a Maori, Harry Mahanga, aged 30, was killed instantaneously. With other men, Mr. Mahanga was employed in pulling willows from a stream with the aid of a steel drum, wire cables and a long wooden pole to which was harnessed ahorse. With the strain fully applied the shaft broke and. swinging back, struck him on the forehead, inflicting severe injuries. An inquest was opened and adjourned by the coroner, Mr. G. H. Morrish.
