Peterson's Oebut.-€. Peterson, the St. lake's full-oack, juetibed hie initial selection for Auckland by hie eound defence. Hie robuet clearances were reminiscent df his club mate F. Clark, the ex-New Zealand and Auckland representative. It wae pleasing to see the calm manner in which he faced the fast raiding country forwards. Maiwhall, the Auckland custodian, gave a model exhibition between the posta, and his repeated spectacular eavee earned the applause of the crowd.
Juniors' Bright Display.-In the curttunraieer at Hobeon Park the Country B repe. emerged victorioue by one goal (3—2) scored in the last two nwnutee ot play. Playing with better understanding the forwards set the pace and never letup. Wish juet a ohance to have a few games together and work up a little cohesion they would improve greatly on the daahing game which they played on Saturday. Outstanding in the forwards -were C. Aehton, J. Carter end 8. Bell. K Wyatt proved a eound and reliable full-back, who repelled the raiding Auckland forwards with criep and well-directed, clearances.
Coldham's Goals.—His goal tally_for the season wae increased notably by R. Coldham, playing inside-right for Auckland against Country. Of the six goals scored for Auckland he obtained four unmarked. If the Country side had fie]ded any player of similar ability there might have, been a different score to record, for the visitors surprised the town eleven in the opening stages of play when they assaulted the Auckland goal with sharp sorties and managed to run up a two-goal lead. It wae only to be expected that after a week of strenuous hockey, the country players would not be able to maintain the pace they set from the start, but they certainly put up a good performance.
A Country Veteran.—When asked to say how many years he had been playing hockey, R. Spiers, the captain of the Country "Reps" evaded the question. On Saturday, he demonstrated that he has lost none of his resourcefulness, and his clever stickwork frequently proved a stumbling block to the Auckland vanguardThe Country forwards were somewhat unlucky in the closing stages of the game when first Phillips, then Ashton both missed great chances of scoring through centring instead of having a shot with only the goalie to beat.
