GANDHI OVERRULED
Congress Committee Supports War Measures. FULL WEIGHT PLEDGED. (Received 2 p.m.) WAKDIIA (India), June 21. Tho working committee of Congress has abandoned the principle of nonviolence in dealing with external aggressiori, but will continue in the pursuit of political aims by non-violent means.
Gandhi opposed the decision in a discussion lasting a week, but ho failed to dissuade the" committee, which has now.pledged full weight for recruiting and arms production.
The committee issued the following statement:—"lt has been demonstrated that warfare does not lead to peace and freedom.
"The world's choice is the uttermost degradation or pcaee through non-1 violence, but in view of the present I transitional period in India, and the failings of human nature, the committee does not go the whole way with Gandhi. It feels that Indians are not imbued with the spirit of non-violence and therefore the committee has freed Gandhi from the responsibility of con- | ducting Congress policy, regarding the external and internal defence of India. 3
