"BILLY" GAVE ALL HE HAD
THE spirit in - which Aucklanders, young and old, responded to the last day's feverish campaigning in aid of the queen carnival yesterday was exempli, ned in the action of a small boy, "Billy," who stepped brightly up to the mobile mock court in Durham Street and pleaded guilty as charged to having holes in his socks, or, alternatively, ants in his pants. When "fined," he told the Judge: "I haven't a penny of my pocket money left, but I'll tell you what —here's my birthday signet ring!" And he gave "his Honor" an engraved gold ring. The ring was later auctioned and raised £5 dead. It was then handed back to the auctioneer, who offered it "to any girl who has a boy friend, first bid over £2 taken." A girl immediately called "Three pounds!" So the lad who gave his most treasured possession to-day has the satisfaction of knowing that it was the means of the sick and wounded soldiers' fund benefiting by £8.
