URGES WITHDRAW
HERTZOG ON WAR. "Dishonourable Proposal," Says Smuts. DECISIVELY REJECTED. United Press Association.—Copyright. (Received 1.30 p.m.) JOHANNESBURG, June 20. General Smuts descrißed as dishonourable a written proposal from General Hertzog that South Africa should "immediately take all necessary measures to withdraw from the war/' General Hertzog, in a letter to General Smuts, protested "Ajjnihst the reckless risk to national freedom and the senseless eacrifice of Afrikander youth in the fruitless struggle." He demanded, on behalf of Afrikanders, immediate withdrawal from the war and declared that a peaceful, but determined, mas« protect m now required against compulsion for the furtherance i of the war effort. j "In view of present feeling further compulsion may lead to far-reaching disturbances for which the Government has j to bear the responsibility," he said. "The Allied cause wan doomed to failure after the capture of Paris." General Smut* replied that Parliament has already decisively rejected this dishonourable proposal. .If again submitted it would suffer the same fate.
