BRITAIN'S GLAD CRY "ANZACS ARE HERE"
Warm-Hearted Welcome Given MESSAGE FROM KING Safe Arrival After Long Trip Round Cape Of Good Hope TROOPS IN GREAT HEART (United Press Association. —Copyright.—Roc. 10 a.m.) J LONDON, June 20.
The special representative of the Associated Press, from a "port in Britain," states that a contingent of New Zealanders, commanded by Brigadier J. Hargest, and Australians commanded by Brigadier H. D. Wynter, arrived safely after a voyage round the Cape. The troops were in great heart and were given a spontaneous heartfelt welcome for their timely arrival in the most needy hours of the Allied cause. They are the first of the new Anzacs to land on British soil and are now encamped "somtfwhere in England" for final training. As the armada of ships in which they had crossed the world to war steamed into port an official launch bearing messages from His Majesty the King, Mr. Anthony Eden, Minister of War, and from the Dominions Office slipped out and received a thunderous welcome from thousands of Anzacs lining the rails and strung up the rigging to the masthead. They were all there—Diggers with the familiar slouch hats and the badge with the rising sun, New Zealanders in their own distinctive uniforms, and Maoris smiling broadly, and here and there a splash of red and white of the Dominion nurses. It was good to see them. The cry "The Anzacs are here" swept quickly round the port. " ' The King, in his message, said:— ?' "To the officers commanding the Australian and New Zealand contingents,——A tew months ago we sent a few words of welcome to the first contingent of the 2nd A.I.F. and N.Z.E.F. when they disembarked in the Middle East. It has fallen to your lot to come to the United Kingdom and to take your place alongside "us. You find us in the forefront of the battle. To all I give a warm welcome, knowing the stern purpose that brings you from your distant homes. I send best wishes and look forward to seeing you soon.—George R. 1."
