AUSTRALIANS' SUCCESS.
Two visiting Australian University debaters, Messrs. A. M. Jenkins and D. M. Campbell, gained a narrow victory over " team from the Auckland University College last, evening in a debute on the subject, "That the efforts ot the Press to control public opinion are a menace to democracy." The debate wn* held in the University College hall The affirmative was taken by the Auckland team, comprising Miss Dorothea Monell and Mr. G. Cawkwell. Chairman was Mr. P. Day. The debaters had only 24 bonus to prepare their arguments, owing to a change in the subject, and weakiicKs in matter was remarked upon by Mr. J. Hogben. who acted as judge, with l>r. F. J. Gwynne. The point was also made by Mr. Hogben that the visiting debaters had partly lost sight of the wording of the subject in stating that any efforts to control public opinion wer? not successful. One of the speakers in the Auckland team lost points for the side by over-running allotted time.
