COLLECTION SCHEME. CENTRAL COUNCIL APPOINTED PROPOSAL EXPLAINED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON", this day. "I promised last week that I would announce at an early date the nature of the organisation which has now commenced operations for the purpose of advising householders, farmers and industrialists what to save in the way of waste products, what to gather ready for transport to selected centres, and with whom contact should he made for the purpose of putting the salvage of was'c campaign into immediate operation," said the Minister of Supply, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, last night. "First, it has been decided to protect in every way possible the interest of all persons, companies and institutions who have, been making a livelihood or raising revenue by waste collection, and those undertakings will be woven very closely into the general scheme. Mr. Charles Todd, who is widely known throughout New Zealand as one of the Dominion's leading business men, has offered his, services, voluntarily to lead and organise this important matter. His offer has been accepted by the Government, discussions have taken place between myself and Mr. Todd, and organisation has been agreed upon, The net results for all the waste -collected will be paid to patriotic funds. "Mr. Todd is inviting a number of men, representative of trade unions, and commercial, industrial, publicity and otiier sections of the community, to form, with myself as chairman, a directing executive to be known as the Waste Materials Central Council, which will have its head office in 110, Courtenay Place, Wellington, and which is commencing operations forthwith in Wellington Province firstly. Action will be extended to all other provinces and centres and also to remote districts at an carlj' date." • Appointments Announced. Tho following persons have already accepted appointment to the Central Council: Messrs E. A. Batt and J. M. A. Ilott, both well-known business men, Mr. John Read, of the Timbct Workers' Union, Mr. J. W. Collins, for some years secretary of the Department of Industries and Commerce, and recently retired from the position of Trade Commissioner in Canada, Mr. J. E. Middleton Assistant Secretary of Supply. The Central Council will also have direct liaison with the National Patriotic Fund Board, through its secretary, Mr. G. A. Hayden. "Because of the enormous number and constructive suggestions offered by many people by telegram and by letter there is abundant evidence that the publii are behind this effort. These offers and suggestions have been placed in the hands of the Central Council. Special instructions will be issued from time to time directing all those who desire t". know what to save and how to save it, and how to prepare it for transport ti the central depots. Addresses of persons and committees in each locality will be made known as soon as possible. "In the meantime metals, paper and rags arc valuable and should be carefully gathered and made ready in handy places. Lists of other materials will be published later.
