AGAINST WASTE.

CAMPAIGN SUGGESTED. FACTORY, OFFICE, HOME. A recommendation that the Government be urged to launch an intensive campaign against waste in the shop, the office and business premises, the home and the factory was decided" on by today's- meeting of the council of the Chamber of Commerce following the presentation of a lengthy report on the eubject by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. It was further resolved to suggest to the Government that it eet up an organisation to deal with the question. "We have no more than scratched the surface of Auckland," said Mr. D. G. Stocker, presenting the report. Dealing with the shop, Mr. Stocker said it was suggested that there be greater co-operation between the assistant and the customer. People could be urged to carry their own goods. Saving could be effected in the way of paper, cartons, boxes and electricity consumption. In offices and business premises stocks should be planned, orders be ready for travellers, and mutual clearing houses might be arranged. Mr. Stocker said housewives could economise by saving clean tins, string and paper. The collection of materials, such as scrap metal, could be undertaken by firms dealing in waste products, local bodies, and by such organisations as boy scouts and girl guides. Mr. J. A. C. Alluin said every effort should be made to save goods the substitution of wJiich was difficult. Members were unanimous that a publicity campaign was necessary as nart of the general campaign. Congratulations were extended to the junior chamber on the report.
