AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY.
COLLEGE BILL DEFERRED.
At yesterday's meeting of the Auckland University College Council, a letter was received from the Minister of Education, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, stating that attention could not be given at present to the bill to alter the composition of the council owing to pressure of work arising in part from the war. The Minister said he would be glad to consider the bill when a favourable opportunity arose. In reply to the suggestion by a member that the Minister's reply implied that the bill might be shelved, the president of the council, Mr. W. 11. Cocker, said he expected the matter would be considered at an early date. He believed Mr. Mason was genuinely interested in the bill. I On the recommendation of the Pro- 1 fessorial Board, the Fowlds Memorial Medal for 1940 was awarded to R. H. Stokes, M.Sc., as the most distinguished student of the year among candidates for a master's degree. In order to provide for an additional scholarship of £40 for two years, open to matriculated students of one year's standing, for English and history _in alternate years, regulations governing the Lissie Ratlibonc Scholarship were amended. The Onehunga Borough Council scholarship for the scholar of an Onehunga school gaining the highest place in the university entrance scholarship was awarded this year to T. N. Lynch.
