COMPULSORY SERVICE.

NO TIME FOR PACIFISTS. "Pacifists who maintain their ideals at the present time are cranks," said Mr. H. K. Hatriek, of Bay of Islands, in moving a remit at the Auckland Provincial Farmers' Union conference yesterday urging the Government to adopt conscription for military service at home and overseas.

All were probably pacifists at heart, but there were times when all had to scrap their ideals, said Mr. Hatriek. This was a time when we had to kill or be killed. "I wish to say that lam a member of the Labour party," he added. "If they cannot stand criticism from me, then God help them."

Many other delegates spoke in support of the resolution, which was adopted inanimously.
