BLIND CHAMOIS.

CAUGHT BY HAND.

SPORTSMEN'S OBSERVATIONS.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

NELSON, this day.

A very large number of chamois in an extensive area of the Southern Alps have been affected with permanent blindness, according to Nelson sportsmen. They noticed it three years ago, and confirmed it during a recent snooting expedition, when they saw carcases of chamois which had died for no other reason but blindness. They even caught some animals by hand. Others were eeen in a dying condition and there was no chance of their recovering. Of many chamois seen by the party, only two had their eyesight unimpaired. Chamois have now established themselves in Travers Valley, at the head of Lake Rotoiti, where they have been shot by deer culiers; also at the head of D'Urville River, at the head of Lake Rotoroa. So far no blind animals have been noticed in those areas in the Nelson province.
