AUCKLAND TROTTING
EXCITING SPORT.
STEWART'S HAT-TRICK. MOLLY DIRECT ATONES. OUR JEWEL BEATS REVISION. Splendid racing, with the majority of the horses engaged running up to their recent public form, distinguished the trotting at Alexandra Park on Saturday, when a large attendance braved somewhat unpleasant weather conditions fo witness the Auckland Club's autumn meeting. Mr. W. T. Lowe's Jack Totts mare Molly Direct, one of a bracket of three., and the winner of the rergusson Handicap, principal event of. the day, was an exception, insofar as latest public appearances are concerned, in rliat she failed to till a place in either of the two main races at Wellington a few days earlier. She had proved in. fhe past that she had a distinct partiality for the Epsom track, and on Saturday she finished with great determination to wrest the lead from Parauri in the last few yards. Halfway down the home stretch Parauri appeared to- have the issue in safe keeping, but Molly Direct, vigorously driven by M. Stewart, answered every call to get fhe verdict. Nothing finished as well in the Ferfrusson as Fortex, the third horse, who was only a neck behind the winner as they flashed past the judge. When the Held reached the straight Fori'ex was in a pocket on the rails, and C. G. Smith had to check her to e;et clear and come round. This co6t her the race. Strangely enoug-h. Fortex was one of the Stewart bracket. but she had be?n transferred fiom his stable just after the Wanganui fixture at Claudelauds on the previous Saturday. Another horse to_ put in good work over the concluding " stages was Tangatu (fourth). He was well up at the rum, but on the outeide, and had to 'cover a lot of extra ground. He may win at the Auckland meeting next month. A Grand Dame. When Sfewart drove Grand Dame to victory in the Franklin Handicap he completed a winning treble, as he had alreadywon the second division of the Devonport Handicap with Crucible. Grand Dame, a five-year-old mare- by Jack Potts from Marama Rose, has always shaped like a stayer, and she confirmed the impression by coming -with a well-sustained run over the final quarter of a mile to defeat; Kitty's Choice, the early pacer-maker, quite comfortably. Isabella Pointer ran a good race to get fourth, after tnreatening danger at the turn, and it may be that , she is not a genuine etayer., ■ • The American-bred trotting stallion Joeedale Dictator gave F. J. Smith a little consolation for fr-is nairow defeat with Parauri. in the Fergusson by winning the Whitford Handicap like a good house. It is quite obvious that the squire of "Village Farm" has worked considerable improvement in the sis-year-old eon of Peter Lincoln and Calumet Beads, and he might win again ere the season ends. The. only ■ other- trotter to impress was Air Pilot, who ran a greatly-improved Tace within a very short period. His turn may not be far off. Mre. L. A. Sformont's good-looking Nobleman pacer Cavalryman put his best foot forward in the April Handicap to lead practically all the way and defeat the win favourite Crucible quite _ comfortably. There ie no doubt about this horse s speed, and now that he has had a few runs in public he is doing better in his races. Sweet Aloes, Repose and Alcazar were the only others to convey the impression that they may do.better now that they have had the extra experience. The last race of the day, the Henderson Handicap, resulted in a great struggle between Revision and Our Jewel, and the latter gave his numerous supporters a great run down the straight to beat Revision on the post. There was little between these two, and although Our Jewel won on hie merits it can be borne, in mind that Revision commenced her run a good way from the jodgej and had to go round her field. Both Bronze Queen and Transwell finished strongly, and ehouW be in the money before tiheyarea v inonth older. Betting was extraordinarily brisk, the total runnings to £41,701, compared with £25,812 10/ for the corresponding day last year, an increase of £15,888 10/.
