MAN IDENTIFIED.
FOUND SHOT IN DOMAIN.
MISSING FROM QUEENSLAND.
After nearly five months of inquiry, the identity of the man whose body was found in the Auckland Domain 011 the morning of December 5 last has been identified. The deceased was Mr. Thomas Kemp, single, aged 60, formerly of Yangan, Toowoomba, Queensland, who came to New Zealand in January, 1938.
The body was found in the busli near a track known as "Lovers' Walk." There was a bullet wound in the head, and an automatic pistol was clasped in the right hand. Nothing was found in the man's clothing which would give even a clue to his identity. His clothes were carefully preserved by the police, who took full-face and profile photographs. These were distributed throughout New Zealand, but no information was forthcoming.
A few weeks ago the New Zealand police received particulars of a man reported missing from Queensland. Photographs were sent to the Queensland police, and replies confirming the identity of the man have been received in Auckland from his brother. Mr. James Kemp, aged 70. and Constable J. W. Hendry, of Yangan station, who knew him personally. In his letter Mr. James Kemp gave the name of a firm of clothiers from whom his brother bought a suit in Sydney. The tabs found on the clothing bore the name of the Sydney firm mentioned in the letter.
No fewer than 40 members of the New Zealand and Queensland police took part in the lengthy inquiries. Now that identity has been established, the inquest will* shortly be completed.
