NEW FIRE STATION.
'"WITHIN" REASONABLE SIGHT."
A statement that plans for the calling of tenders in connection with the erection of the new fire station, on property opposite the existing station, were expected to be ready by the end of the present month, was made by the chairman of the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board, Mr. ,T. J. Kingston, at a meeting of the board this morning.
Mr. Kingston was replying to Mr. T. A. C. ALlum, and speaking to a report relating to minor complaints with respect to livingiconditions at the present station. The report stated that further inquiries had been made into matters complained of by officers of the Health Department, in conjunction with .-epresentatives of the board and, with the exception of the fumes nuisance, steps for the minimising of which had to be taken, the best arrangements possible had been made.
Reference to tfce new fire station was also made by the secretary, Mr. Percy Butler, in his annual report. He stated that in May. 1939, an additional property was purchased for £6000 in order to improve the lay-out of the new station. In the final plans, now in course of completion, this property, owing to an increase in the cost of the scheme, was not included. Satisfactory loan arrangements for carrying out the work woie now being made.
