AN ULTIMATUM.
Striking Miners Must Return To Work. AUSTRALIAN DISPUTE. CANBERRA, April 23. Tlie Prime Minister. Mr. Menzies. dramatically gave an ultimatum to the striking coal miners when he announced in the House of Representatives that, unless the mine workers decided this week to resume work and seek a settlement of their dispute by constitutional means, the Government will take steps to reopen the mines at the beginning of next week. Mr. Menzies added that the Government was determined that war industries and essential services shall be maintained. In Melbourne. Chief Judge of the Commonwealth Arbitration Court, Sir G<?orgc Beeby. declared: "I now state finally that the Court will not call any conference to settle the coal strike, but if the men resume work the Court will begin hearing immediately any application which may be made for variation of the existing award, and further action will be taken to set up conciliation committees in the c-oal areas. "It would be quite futile to call a compulsory conference to discuss a strike against an award made in the first instance as the result of a compulsory contoreu«."
