JARVIS, DOMINION CHAMPION, AND GILDO OPEN BOXING SEASON.
Jack Jarvis, Xew Zealand lightweight champion, is assured of a warm welcome when he meets his old rival Gildo at the Town Hall next Monday night, this being the opening match of the boxing season. Gildo and Jarvis did not micet last season, but their stirring encounters of 1938 are still enthusiastically recalled, and as the honours are now even a keenlycontested bout can be anticipated. Both lighters performed creditably last season. In Australia Gildo was" kept exceptionally busy, fighting on the average once a fortnight. Among others he met Henry Hutchison, whom lie considers the best boxer at present in Australia. Kui Kong Young and Joe Hall, one of the fastest lightweights over there. Jarvis, however, is no novice at the game and his return to form last season was one of the bright spots of professional boxing. As he beat Billy Aitken, Harry Summers and Percy Kelly, as well as Raynor, he undoubtedly deserved the title which he secured by a sensational k.o. over Raynor at Auckland. Amateur supports will precede the Gildo-Jarvis contest and patrons seem assured of an excellent night's entertainment.
