SOUNDLY BRED.

SON OF CROUPIER. TWO WINS AT OAMARU. NOTES AND COMMENTS. The Raker, winner of two races at Oainaru, was purchased as a yearling by 0 his present owner, Mr. W. J. Dorc, of ] Fan-lie, for 70gs. By Croupier from Kip--5 pet Lee, Ihe Raker can claim some sound - breeding. Croupier, by Surveyor from 1 Pellet by Thurnham from Pell by Hyinettus, was a high-class racehorse, winning 12 races, including the Wanganui Guineas. Harcourt Cup, L.J.C. Handicap in coursc , record time,' Criterion Handicap, Cashmere t Plate, and Longbeach Hack Handicap. 1 and was only once unplaced in his two . and three-year-old career. Kippet Lee is . by Arausio from Snowshoe, by Kilbronoy i lrom Snowstell. This is the same family i that produced Arctic King.. Pandava, - habbi and Inflation. It is interesting to 1 note that Kippit Lee's next foal, now - trained at Rieearton and known as Roman •Son, is by Inflation, and shows a good - deal of promise. ° i - . , . ENGLISH CLASSIC DATES. r I he dates fixed for the English Dcrby • and Oaks arc Wednesday and Thursday, . June 12 and 13. ; SHOULD STAY ON. Midgard, who scored twice at Oainaru , last week, has now won four races for t I'. C. Pratt, who holds the half-brother to Epris on lease from his breeder. Miss T. Jackson. Most of Yalkyrian's stock , act well in soft going, but Midgard won ; on the first day on a fast track, and the ; manner in which he finished on Saturday suggested that another furlong should not bother him. i _______ A FURTHER APPEAL. After tlie Trial Stake*; at Oainaru last • week. Jlrs. E. \V. Lewis, owner of Yaunt, ' was fined .£4 by the stipendiary steward, Mr. C. F. Llartland. for the late scratch- ; ing of the horse. Mrs. Lewis appealed to the club's judicial committee, who decided i to reduce the fine to £1. The stipendi- ■ arv steward then notified the committee that he would appeal to the Racing Conference for a ruling on his action. Under the rules of racing, the stipendiary steward has power to fine owners who fail ' to scratch horses within the stipulated time any amount from £1 to £20. Vaunt was not withdrawn until after the other horses had gone to the post. — J HIGHEST-PRICED YEARLING. The 3500gs paid by Mr. Alan Cooper for the Beau Pere—Banita 'colt at the 1 Sydney sales is the highest-priced Australian yearling since 1!)28. In that year a colt by Saltash—Welter, subsequently uained Dominant, brought the record price of 6750g5. Bidding for the Bc.iu Pere colt started at 500gs. J. T. Jamicson bid up to 3000gs. Mr. Cooper is very pleased with his purchase. He has seen the colt regularly since lie was foaled, and was first of all attracted by his conformation and then by his breeding. "The more I saw of him the more the desire to own him grew," he said, nis dam (Banita) is an imported French mare by Dark Legend descending from the same family as Buchan. Craig an Fran. Saltash, Tiberius. Sceptre (her fourth dam), and Ormonde. J HURDLER SOLD. The Southland owner, Mr. W. D. McLeod, has purchased the hurdler All Blood from the Awapuni owner-trainer. G. W. New. and has handed him over to T. E. Pankhurst to train at Invercargill. All Blood is an eight-year-old gelding by Psychology from the Solferino—Raid mare Bloodshed, and is a half-brother to Lordly Knight. Raid was half-sister to Oka, the dam of First Acre and Opa. and from the same family came King's Guest, winner of the Great Northern Hurdles. All Blood has won one hurdle race, the Kiipiti Hurdles at the Otaki-Maori meeting last ■ September, and he has been placed on several occasions. Actually he has done little racing. He had three starts as a ; three-year-old and was then off the scene ' for three seasons. He started twice in his 1 sixth year, and has had 12 starts in the ! ensuing two seasons. 1 TURN OF LUCK. ' 1 The Palmcrston North sportsman, Mr. C. 1. Kceble, had a turn of luck at Hastings, where he captured the two hack sprints, Black Majesty winning at a good price on the first day and .Dainty Dell beating another and better-fancied stable- i mate in Proclamation oil the second day. Both these three-year-olds are bv tJie 1 Hurry On stallion Defoe. Black Majesty is out of the Lucullus—Moondine snare Lucky Bag, a winner of useful prizes for . Mr. Kceble, including an event at Trentham, and he is a horse who might go a long way as a sprinter once lie learns to settle down better in his races. Daintv , Dell, who is out of that useful Lackham— , Da'c Ogden mare Bonnie Yale, is one of the occasional purchases made at the yearling sales by Mr. Keeble, and at the loOgs paid for her she is alreadv a profitable investment. She is the member of the string who might develop good staying form, as she liails from the familv that produced Sasanof. All Red. Indigo. Karapoti, Rose Pink, and other excellent performers over a distance. HASTINGS YOUNGSTERS. The coming two-year-olds are now mak- | ing their appearance on the Hastings I tracks and, while still in the rough, gome i of them are very attractive. The one that catches the eye, however, is the chestnut i y<ear ling colt by Thcio from Painted i screen, and it is safe to say that he would ' have topped the list for the Theios offered * it he had been at the national yearling v sales m January (says "Moturoa"). This 1 joungetcr is a ready-made galloper and • probably the most forward of the Hastings , contingent. He has been well done and < he has .plenty of room for further develop- i ment. However, he leav.es the impression 1 that he will come to band carlv and I « will be greatly surprised if he docs not 1 make a name for himself in the early 2 spring. The Theio colt is trained by J. Kyan and is bred on winning lines, his , dam Painted Screen being the dam of the g Breeders' Plate winner Movie Star, as c well as Screen Star, Screen Lord and I Tableau. She was by Leighton from Val- < vate, by Feramorz from the imported f Llangwym mare Shrill, dam of Father's * Voice, High Pitch and High Art (darn of Ivar and Nora Gregor).

TE MAHANGA STUD.

The Hunting Song—Callisto colt Areas and the Gascony—Mori filly Peata have gone out to the Te Mahanga stud for a spell and will be given a chance to freshen up for their spring preparations. Both showed flashes of good form this spring and it will surprise if they do not win

important races next season (says "Motiiora)". Mr. W. A. Irons' Vernieer—Astarth colt, who was purchased at the national yearling sales last January for 425g5, has been at Te Mahanga for three months and has now been taken over by J. H. Jefferd at Kgatarawa to be broken in for racing in the spring. This youngster made great progress through the summer and his connections are particularly pleased with him. This colt is by the new Solario horse Vermeer, whose stock at the sales impressed by their quality, while he comes from a wonderful racing line on the distaff side. His dam, Astarth, was a smart galloper in her day and a half-sister to the mighty Amnion Ra, winner of over £25,000 in stakes. The Hawke's Bay Cup winner The Ring is to go out for a short rest at Te Mahanga, but it is understood that she will be raced at the later winter meetings.
